The Knock on the Fourth of July
The last man to see my brother alive knocked on my front door fifty five years late, on the Fourth of July, while the first fireworks were still climbing over the trees at the end of Cotter Street.
I know exactly what time it was, because I had just set the second bottle of orange soda on the porch rail the way I do every year, and the town whistle over at the fire station had just blown eight o’clock, and the Hutchins boys two doors down had started throwing those little paper poppers at each other in the yard. I had my brother’s old lawn chair unfolded next to mine, the aluminum one with the woven seat that has been re-strapped so many times there is nothing original left of it but the frame, and I was lowering myself into my own chair when I heard shoes on the porch steps.
Nobody comes up my porch steps on the Fourth of July. In fifty five years, nobody ever has. The whole town of Barlow, Missouri, knows where I am on the evening of the Fourth, and the whole town of Barlow, Missouri, has the good manners to leave me there.
He was an old man. Late seventies, I would have said, and I spent forty years nursing at the county hospital, so I am rarely wrong about a body’s age by more than a year or two. Pressed short-sleeve shirt buttoned to the second button. Gray slacks with a crease somebody had worked hard on. He had a ball cap in his hands, not on his head, one of those dark blue caps with gold stitching that veterans wear, and he was holding it against his chest with both hands the way men of his generation hold a hat when they are about to say something that costs them.
Under his left arm, pinned against his ribs like he was afraid it might get away from him, was a cigar box wrapped twice around with a rubber band.
“Ma’am,” he said. “Are you Charlene Espy?”
I said I was.
His mouth worked for a second with nothing coming out. Down the street the first real shell went up from the ball field, a green one, and burst over the tree line, and I watched this stranger flinch at the sound. Not startle. Flinch. Deep, whole-body, sixty-years-of-practice flinch, the kind I used to see in the beds of the east wing when a food cart backfired a wheel against a door frame. And then he steadied himself, and looked me in the eye, and said the thing that took the porch out from under me.
“Denny’s Charley?”
Nobody has called me that since 1971. My name is Charlene, and I have been Charlene to every teacher, every patient, every friend and every enemy I ever had. One person on this earth called me Charley, and he has been gone since I was ten years old, and his name is on a bronze plaque outside the Barlow post office, and his lawn chair was sitting empty four feet from where I stood.
“My name is Orville Hatch,” the old man said. “I was with your brother in Vietnam. I was beside him at the end.” He stopped and swallowed and his eyes went shiny and his voice came apart on the next part, so that it arrived in pieces. “I made him a promise, ma’am. I am fifty five years late keeping it. But I’d like to keep it now, if you’ll let me.”
I want to tell you the whole thing. To do that I have to go back, because you cannot understand what that man’s knock did to me unless you understand the knocks that came before it.

Denny was ten years older than me, which in most families would have made us strangers, but our family did not work like most families. Our mother, Faye, cleaned houses and did alterations, and our father, Judd, drove a propane route that kept him gone eleven hours a day, and so from the time I could walk, my brother Denny was the one who raised me half the time. He walked me to school. He taught me to ride a bicycle in the church parking lot on a Sunday evening, running bent over behind me with his hand on the seat, lying to me the whole time about whether he had let go. He could not cook anything but fried bologna and pancakes, and so on the nights our parents both worked late, that is what we ate, and to this day I cannot smell bologna in a hot skillet without my chest going tight.
But the Fourth of July was ours in a way no other day was.
It started when I was five or six. Barlow shoots its fireworks from the ball field on the far side of the creek, and if you sit on our front porch on Cotter Street, the shells come up over the trees like they are being launched out of the woods themselves. Most of the town drives to the field and sits on blankets. Denny said that was for amateurs. He said the porch was the best seat in the county because you got the fireworks and the lightning bugs at the same time, and no mosquitoes off the creek, and your own bathroom.
So we had a ritual, and the ritual never changed. In the afternoon he would walk me down to Purdy’s feed store, which sold sparklers out of a coffee can by the register every summer, and he would buy two packs, one for each of us, with his own money from mowing. Then two bottles of orange soda from the cooler, the glass bottles, so cold the paper labels went soft. We put the sodas in the icebox until dark. When the whistle blew eight, we carried our chairs out, and we set the sodas on the porch rail, and we did not open them until the first shell went up. That was the rule. Denny invented the rule and Denny enforced the rule, solemn as a deacon.
And then the fireworks would start, and my brother would name them. He made up a name for every kind of shell like he was announcing horses at a race. The gold ones that trailed down slow and crackling were Grandma’s Church Hair. The white strobing ones were The Paparazzi. The big red peonies were Mrs. Tillman’s Tomatoes, after the lady across the street who grew tomatoes the size of softballs and guarded them like Fort Knox. I would laugh until orange soda came up my nose, and he would sit there straight-faced like he had no idea what was funny.
When the show ended we lit the sparklers, and he taught me to write my name in the air with the light. You had to write it fast, all in one go, before the sparkler died. Charley is easier to write fast than Charlene. He said that was the whole reason for the nickname, and maybe it even started that way, but it stuck to every day of the year. I was Charley to him at breakfast, Charley at Christmas, Charley in every one of the letters that came later with the strange stamps on them.
Write it fast, Charley, before it dies. Every year. Both of us on the dark lawn, waving light against the dark, writing our names on nothing.

The draft notice came in the spring of 1970, when Denny was nineteen and I was eight going on nine. I did not understand most of what happened in our kitchen in the weeks after that. I understood that my mother cried at the stove with her back to us, and that my father got quieter than he already was, and that the men at church shook Denny’s hand differently, with a kind of grip that looked like it hurt.
Denny went to basic that summer and came home in the fall before he shipped out, and he was the same and not the same. Leaner. His hair gone. He hugged my mother longer. But he was still Denny. The Army made him a Private First Class, and he showed me how to know his rank, and then he mostly did not want to talk about the Army at all. He wanted to talk about whether Purdy’s would still have sparklers in the can next summer.
Because here is the thing that everyone in my family said out loud that fall, over and over, like saying it could notarize it: he would be home in a year. His tour would be up in the fall of ’71. He would miss one Fourth of July, exactly one, and then never miss another.
The last one we had together was July of 1970, after his notice, before basic. He was quiet that day, and I was too young to fully know why, but the ritual held. Feed store, sparklers, two orange sodas sweating on the rail. When the first shell went up he named it (it was a Grandma’s Church Hair, I remember, gold and slow), and partway through the show I looked over and my big brother was not watching the sky. He was watching me watch the sky.
“Next year I’ll be watching these from somewhere real strange, Charley,” he said. “But the year after that, I’m right here in this chair. That’s a promise. You hold my seat.”
I said okay. You hold my seat. I have held it for fifty five years.

He wrote letters. My mother read them at the table after supper, editing as she went, I know now, skipping paragraphs her eyes touched and her voice refused. To me he wrote separately, little half-page notes at the bottom or on their own paper. Denny’s letters to me were about food, mostly, and the rain. He said it rained in Vietnam like somebody had ripped the bottom out of the sky. He said the Army made a pancake so bad it should be tried for crimes. He said there was a boy from Ohio in his platoon who was teaching him harmonica, and that between the two of them they had almost one whole song.
He signed every letter the same way. Hold my seat.
On the morning of July 9th, 1971, a green government sedan came up Cotter Street slow, the way cars move when the driver is reading house numbers. I was on the porch shelling peas into a bowl, because that was my Friday chore, and I watched that car come like it was any car. It stopped in front of our house. Two soldiers got out in dress uniforms, and put their caps on in unison, and came up the walk, and knocked.
I did not know what it meant. I was ten. My mother knew before she got the door all the way open. I heard the bowl of her voice crack on one syllable, my father’s name, and the peas went everywhere, and I am sixty five years old and I have never shelled a pea since.
The men were kind and terrible. They said the things they are given to say. Private First Class Dennis Ray Espy. Died of wounds. July 4th, 1971.
The Fourth of July. While Barlow was on its blankets at the ball field. While the shells I would not watch that year (we had gone to bed early, my mother could not bear the noise with Denny gone) were bursting over the tree line, my brother was dying on the other side of the world, eleven hours ahead, on a hillside near a river whose name I have never once been able to say out loud.
He was twenty years old. He had four months left on his tour.
The funeral was at First Baptist, and it was the whole town, the way small-town funerals are. Casseroles arrived at our house in a tide. The county paper ran his senior picture. There was a flag folded into that tight, terrible triangle and placed in my mother’s arms, and I remember being angry at how beautiful the folding was, all that precision spent on the worst object anyone had ever handed us. My father did not cry at the church. That night I found him on the porch with a piece of sandpaper, sanding the porch rail in the dark, over and over, the same three feet of rail where the soda bottles always sat, sanding it like he could take the whole house down to bare wood one stroke at a time.
The Army sent Denny’s footlocker home that fall. His civilian clothes. His harmonica, with a dent in it. His Bible from the church. But some things a soldier carries were not in it, and my mother noticed and never said a word about it to anybody but me, decades later, in the nursing home, in the last year of her life. His lighter wasn’t in there, she said. And my photograph of you. He carried that everywhere. I always wondered.
I wondered too. For most of my life, I wondered.

Here is what fifty five years looks like, so you know what that old man’s knock was landing on.
Every Fourth of July since 1972, I have watched the fireworks from that porch. Alone. That is not a sad-story exaggeration, it is a simple schedule of fact. When my parents were alive I watched with them nearby but the ritual pieces were mine to do, and after they were gone (my father in ’88, my mother in 2009) I bought my sister-of-nobody’s share of nothing and kept the house, and I kept the day.
Every year, two packs of sparklers, even after Purdy’s closed and I had to get them at the gas station out on Route 4. Every year, two bottles of orange soda, glass if I can find them, on the rail. One is mine. One goes on the rail in front of Denny’s chair, unopened. When the first shell goes up, I open mine. When the show is over, his goes in the icebox door, and the next summer I pour last year’s out on my mother’s rose bed and buy fresh. Fifty four bottles of orange soda have gone to those roses. They are, I will have you know, spectacular roses.
I name the fireworks. Out loud, alone on a porch, a grown woman, a retired nurse with a lifetime of perfectly sound judgment, announcing Grandma’s Church Hair to an empty chair. If you think that is crazy, I invite you to lose somebody at ten years old and report back.
In between the Fourths, I built a life, and I want to be fair to that life, because it was a good one. I became a nurse, and anyone who knew our family knew why. I could not fix what happened to Denny, eleven time zones out of my reach, so I spent forty years fixing what was in my reach, nights mostly, at the county hospital, and I was good at it. I married Mack in 1985, a lineman for the co-op with gentle hands and a laugh you could hear across a parking lot, and he understood about the Fourth without ever once making me explain it past the first telling. He would take our daughter, Marcy, to the ball field with the blankets and the crowd, and he would leave me the porch, and when they came home he would sit down next to me in the dark, on the steps, never in the chair, and hold my hand, and not say anything. You cannot ask for better than a man who knows which chair not to sit in. I lost Mack six years ago to his heart. Marcy is in Tulsa with her own family now. She calls every Fourth at seven o’clock, before the show, because she knows better than to call during.
And in all those years, one ear was always open. Every veteran who came through my wing with the right age on his chart, I found a way to ask. Where did you serve, and when. I met men from the Delta and Da Nang and Pleiku, and I held some of their hands at the end too, and not one of them had known my brother. The Army’s letters at the time were brief in the way of that war. Died of wounds sustained in hostile action. A chaplain’s condolence. Nothing about the hillside. Nothing about the minutes. Whatever happened to Denny at the end of his life, it happened offstage, in the dark, and the not-knowing sat in our family like a stone in a field, too big to move, plowed around for fifty five years.
Then the whistle blew eight o’clock on this Fourth of July, and an old man in a pressed shirt came up my steps carrying a cigar box, and called me Charley.

I got him into a chair. Not Denny’s. He looked at Denny’s chair, and at the unopened orange soda in front of it, and I watched him understand it in one second flat, and that was the first time he cried, before he had said ten sentences. He cried like men that age cry, furious at themselves, apologizing, wringing the cap.
There was a car parked at the curb with a young woman in the driver’s seat. His granddaughter, Tess, it turned out, who had driven him seven hours from Chillicothe, Ohio, and who stayed in that car for the better part of an hour to let him do this alone, which tells you everything about how she was raised. I sent her out a plate of deviled eggs later. She earned better than deviled eggs.
Orville Hatch talked for two hours, and the fireworks went up over the trees the whole first part of it, and I am going to tell you what he told me, in the order he could get it out.
He was the boy from Ohio. The harmonica. The almost one whole song, which he said, laughing and wiping his eyes, was “Camptown Races,” and they never did get it. He and Denny came into the platoon three weeks apart in the winter of ’70 and ’71 and got tight the way you do out there, which he said is faster and deeper than any friendship civilians get to have, because every day is co-signed. He told me things about my brother that no letter ever carried. That Denny traded cigarettes for canned peaches because he did not smoke and would do near anything for canned peaches. That Denny kept a running joke where he gave the officers’ helicopters names like they were fireworks, and the men picked it up, and pretty soon the whole platoon was calling the resupply bird Mrs. Tillman’s Tomatoes, and none of them but Denny knew why, and Denny would not say. He just grinned. Fifty five years that woman’s tomatoes have been flying around Vietnam in the mouths of infantrymen, and she never knew, and I never knew, and I laughed on my porch until I had to hold the rail.
That is a thing nobody tells you about grief this old. Somebody can still hand you a brand-new memory of your person, mint condition, never used. It is the closest thing to resurrection this side of the resurrection.
And then Orville got quiet, and looked at the box in his lap, and told me about the Fourth of July, 1971.
They were on a hill above a river. He said the name of the river and it went by me like a bird; I have lost it since and I find I do not want it back. Their platoon had been out several days. It was near midnight, which he made sure I understood meant it was still the Fourth of July at home, the afternoon of it, families loading their coolers, and the men had been talking about that all day, what everybody’s town was doing at that exact hour. Denny had told them all about the porch. About the sodas on the rail. About a little sister named Charley who could write her whole name with a sparkler before it died.
The attack came out of the dark and it did not last long. Orville did not dress it up and I will not either. Mortars, then small arms, a few minutes of the world ending, and then over. Three men hit. Two lived. Orville took metal in his shoulder and his leg, and he crawled to Denny, and Denny was hit low and badly, and they both knew what it was. Orville held pressure with the flat of his hand and screamed for the medic, and the medic was working on another man, and my brother was calm.
That is the word Orville used, and he stopped and made me look at him so I would know it was not a kindness. Calm. He said in that whole platoon of scared boys pretending otherwise, Denny at the end of his life was the realest calm he ever saw.
Somebody was firing illumination flares. If you have never seen one, a flare like that goes up over the dark and bursts into this slow, swaying, gold light, hanging under a little parachute, drifting down easy, trailing sparks and smoke. One after another they went up over the hill and hung there swinging, gold light sliding down the sky.
Denny watched them go up. And my brother, twenty years old, four months from home, ten thousand miles from a porch on Cotter Street with his empty chair on it, looked up at those flares coming down slow and gold like the finale of a show only he could fully see, and he smiled, and he said:
“Look, Charley. Fireworks.”
He said it twice, Orville told me. The second time softer. Look, Charley. Fireworks. Like I was right there beside him. Like he had gotten his next year after all. Wherever a person is in their last minutes, whatever door that is and whatever comes through it, my brother spent his looking at gold light in the sky, and he had me with him, and he was not afraid. Orville swore it on his wife’s grave, and by then I knew enough about Orville Hatch to know what that oath cost. He was not afraid, Charley. I have been beside men who were afraid and men who were not, and your brother was not.
Then Denny did the last work of his life, which took, Orville said, everything he had left. He worked his hand into his pocket and came out with his lighter and a folded photograph, and he pushed them at Orville’s chest, and he said, “My sister. Charley. Espy. Barlow, Missouri. You tell her.” He got the town and the name out clear, like coordinates, like a man calling in his own last position. “Tell her I got my fireworks after all. And tell her, hold my seat.”
He was gone before the last flare came down. The medic got there and there was nothing to do and the medic said so, and Orville lay next to my brother under that swinging gold light with two pieces of him in his fist, and that is where the medevac found them both.

The rubber band on the cigar box was so old it broke rather than stretched.
Inside, on top, was the photograph. It is me. Summer of 1969 or 1970, on our front steps, the very steps Orville had just climbed, a skinny kid in a hand-me-down sundress holding a lit sparkler and mid-laugh, mouth wide open, light smeared across the frame where my hand was already moving. Write it fast, before it dies. My mother took it; I remember the camera, a Kodak with a wrist strap. The photo is creased into softness down the middle from a year in a young man’s pocket in a wet country, and there is a stain along one corner that Orville did not explain and I did not ask about, because I am a nurse, and I know what old blood looks like, and there are things you let a man not say.
Under the photo, the lighter. A dented silver Zippo with DRE scratched on the bottom, my brother’s initials, in my brother’s own bad handwriting.
And under the lighter, an envelope that said CHARLEY on it, and inside the envelope, a letter my brother started and never finished, dated July 3rd, 1971.
Dear Charley. Happy Fourth a day early. It is raining like the sky quit its job again but everybody says it will clear by tomorrow so maybe we will get stars. The guys are all talking about home today. I told them about the porch and the sodas and how you write your name faster than any kid in Missouri and nobody believed me that a girl your size drinks a whole bottle in one summer night, so when I get back we are going to have to send proof. One year from right now I am in my chair. You hold my seat and I will hold
That is where it stops. Mid-sentence, mid-promise. He meant to finish it the next day, I suppose, and the next day was the Fourth of July, and the next day is why a stranger was on my porch reading me my own name in my dead brother’s handwriting while the finale went up over the trees.
I did not cry at first, which surprised me. I sat with my brother’s unfinished sentence in my lap, and the flag-red light of the finale on the paper, and what I felt first was not grief. It was arrival. Fifty five years, a stone in the field too big to move, and this trembling old man had moved it, and under it was not the horror I had spent a lifetime declining to imagine. Under it was my brother, calm, watching gold light come down the sky, saying my name.
The crying came later and did not particularly stop for a while, and Orville sat with me through it, and at some point his hand was on my shoulder like a father’s, this stranger, this last warm hand that had touched my brother’s.

“Why fifty five years?” I asked him, when I could.
He took a long time. The show was over by then. The smoke was drifting over the trees and the Hutchins boys had gone in and the street was going quiet the way it does, cordite and cut grass.
He said: “Because I came home and he didn’t, and I could not make that math work, ma’am. I have not watched a fireworks show since 1971. I have spent every Fourth of July since in a basement with a radio on, because the sound takes me straight back up that hill. I drank for a lot of years. Iris got me sober in ’86 and I stayed sober, but sober is not the same as brave.” And then he told me the thing I will be carrying for whatever years I have left. “I drove here in 1979. Sat right there at that curb, in a green pickup, most of an afternoon. I could see a girl on the porch, a teenager, and I knew it was you, and I had the box on the seat beside me. And I put the truck in gear and I drove back to Ohio, and I told myself I would come back when I was stronger. Ma’am, I am so sorry. I told myself that for forty seven more years.”
I remember a green pickup. I want to be careful, because memory is a flatterer, and a county road sees a hundred green pickups. But seventeen-year-old me sat on that porch through a lot of afternoons, and there is a shape in my memory, a truck at the curb that stayed and stayed and then left, and whether that is real or whether I have just now written it in light like a name in the dark, it hardly matters. He came. He carried it. It was too heavy, and he carried it anyway, for fifty five years, and then his wife died, and his heart got the kind of news hearts get at seventy six, and his granddaughter found the Barlow Betterment Facebook page and a photograph of a bronze plaque outside a post office, and he put on a pressed shirt.
“You keep apologizing,” I told him, “for being late. Mr. Hatch, look at me. You kept it. Late counts. Late counts entirely.”
Because here is what I know at sixty five that I did not know at ten: a promise kept late is still a kept promise, and the keeping can cost the keeper more than dying ever costs the dead. Denny’s part took a minute on a hillside. Orville’s part took fifty five years, a marriage, a basement, a radio, and every Fourth of July of his one life. There were two soldiers wounded on that hill who lived, he told me. I understand now that neither one of them ever fully got up.

So this is how the Fourth of July ended in Barlow, Missouri, this year.
I went inside and got the second bottle of orange soda out of the icebox door, the one I buy every year for a dead man, and for the first time in fifty five years, somebody opened it. Orville Hatch held that cold bottle like a chalice, and we did not say anything fancy over it. We said, “To Denny.” That was the whole liturgy. It was enough.
Tess came up and had deviled eggs and pie, and it turns out she is a nurse too, a peds nurse in Columbus, and we talked shop while her grandfather sat in the porch light with my brother’s Zippo in his hand, not flicking it, just holding it, a man putting something down an ounce at a time.
I tried to give the lighter back to him. He looked at me like I had offered him the moon and told him to carry it. “It got where it was going,” he said. “First thing in fifty five years that has.”
They stayed at the motel out by the highway, and in the morning they came for biscuits before the drive, and before he got in the car, Orville Hatch stood on my walk with his cap in both hands and asked me, formal as a schoolboy, whether he might come back next year. His doctor has opinions about how many next years there are, and he said this out loud, plainly, the way I have heard brave patients say it, and Tess is willing to drive him, and he had noticed, he said, that there was a chair.
And I heard myself say the thing before I decided to say it, and it came out in my brother’s voice as much as mine:
“You hold his seat.”
So that is the plan, if the Lord and his heart allow. Next Fourth of July, when the whistle blows eight, there will be two chairs full on this porch for the first time since Richard Nixon was president, and three bottles of orange soda on the rail, because some rituals should grow. An old soldier is going to sit in a dead soldier’s chair, in the best seat in the county, and watch the sky he has hidden from for fifty five years, and when the gold ones come down slow and crackling I am going to lean over and tell him what they are called, and why.
Last night, after they drove off, I found one more thing in the bottom of that cigar box. A pack of sparklers. New ones, the paper crisp, bought this year. Tess told me at breakfast that he had stopped for them at a gas station outside Terre Haute and would not say what they were for.
I did not wait for next year. I stood out on my dark lawn alone, an old woman with her brother’s lighter, and I flicked it on the third try, and it lit like it had been waiting since 1971, and I touched it to a sparkler.
And I wrote his name in the air. D-E-N-N-Y. Fast, all in one go, the way he taught me.
You have to write it fast, before it dies.
But here is the secret, Denny, the one it took me fifty five years and one knock on the door to learn: it doesn’t die. Somebody carries it. Sometimes for half a century, in a cigar box, up a hill in Ohio and down again, through a basement and a bottle and back. Somebody carries it, and one warm evening while the fireworks are climbing over the trees, it comes up your porch steps at last, and it calls you by the name only your brother used, and it hands you the light still burning.
Hold my seat, you said.
Held. Every year. Every single year. And now there is a hand in the darkness holding mine, and gold light coming down the sky, slow, the way you always liked it, and I am ten years old on this porch forever, and look, Denny.
Look. Fireworks.
