The Calf That Cost One Dollar

The Ring

The feeder steer class was at ten in the morning on Friday.

The bleachers along the show ring were about half full, the way they always are for the beef show, mostly grandparents and 4-H families and men in feed caps holding coffee.

Jenna came and sat with me on the third row. She had not sat with me at anything since our divorce.

She did not ask. She just sat down, and put her purse at her feet, and said, “Is she nervous?”

“She’s twelve and she’s about to show a steer,” I said. “She’s nervous enough for both of us.”

Rodney was there. He sat by himself, up near the top on the far end. He had not come down to the barn once all week.

They called the class. Addie came down the alley leading Dollar on his show halter, her show stick in her right hand, her braid down the back of her ironed shirt. She was walking slow and steady, the way Earl taught her.

The way into the ring went right past the bleachers. When she got to the far end, she stopped.

She stopped Dollar too, and he stood square for her like a good one, and she looked up at Rodney.

The whole row around him got quiet. People in our county know everything. They knew about Biscuit.

They had heard about the pool. Half of them had been waiting a year to see what that girl would do.

Addie did not raise her voice. She just said it plain, clear enough that the people around him heard every word.

“If you’d told me about the pool payment,” she said, “I would have helped you. I’d have given you my sale check from Hutchinson. You only had to ask me.”

Rodney’s face went still. Something went out of him all at once, the way air goes out of a tire. He opened his mouth and did not have anything to put in it.

“You can come see Dollar after, if you want,” Addie said. “He likes people.” Then she clucked to her calf and walked him into the ring.

Jenna had both hands over her mouth. I did not look at her, because if I had looked at her I would have been done for, and I wanted to watch my daughter show.
