The Holiday My Family Left Me Off

Instead I found a pattern.

There was a photo album from a birthday party for my brother’s boy, a bounce house in Mom’s backyard, cousins I recognized and a banner I did not, dated three months back. There was a dinner at the steakhouse out on Route 5 celebrating Kermit’s promotion at the grain co op, everyone dressed up, my mother’s arm looped through his like he had hung the moon. There was a baby shower for Katharyn, pale green balloons spelling out WELCOME BABY GALLOWAY across Mom’s porch railing, my sister glowing in a chair surrounded by women I have known my whole life.

I did not know about a single one of these things until that night.

I sat with that for a long time. Then I did the thing that finally broke something open in me. I looked, really looked, at the comments under the baby shower photos, and found my mother’s, posted three weeks earlier. So glad we could all be together for this, she had written, with a heart emoji, under a photo of everyone but me.

All. She had written all, and meant it.
