The Holiday My Family Left Me Off

Leftovers. She was offering me leftovers, from a holiday I did not know had happened, in a house I would walk into already tired and already cleaned up, where my mother would give me that tight smile she gives when she wants a subject to be over, and my brother would find some joking way to make my feelings the problem in the room.

“No,” I said. “I’m okay. Have a good day.”

I hung up before she could soften it any further, because I did not have it in me to hear her try.

I stood alone in that kitchen a long time. Thirty four years old, holding a dish I had made with real care for people who had not thought to include me in the day itself. The reasonable part of me went to work immediately. It was a miscommunication. Mom forgets things. Families are messy. Do not make this into something it is not.

But another part of me, older and more tired than I like to admit, did not move at all. Because somewhere underneath the shock, this did not feel new. It felt like the first time I had let myself see something that had been happening for a while.
