The Granddaughter Who Paid Her Way

Nobody spoke. My father’s jaw worked like he wanted to argue and couldn’t find the words fast enough.

“I have not been eating,” Grandpa said, quieter now, and that quiet scared me more than anything he’d said yet. “Your grandmother thinks it’s my heart. The doctor thinks it might be my stomach. I think it’s this family, and I think I have known it for two months and didn’t have the nerve to say so at a table where everybody’s smiling and passing rolls like nothing’s wrong.”

My grandmother reached over and put her hand on his arm. He patted it once and kept going.

“I built this family on sixty acres and the idea that fair does not mean identical, it means honest,” he said. “Nobody in this house has been honest with Ardelia in three years, and nobody’s been honest with Bethann either, because pretending a grown woman doesn’t need to learn how to stand on her own two feet is not kindness. It’s the opposite of it.”

“Dad,” my father said, “this isn’t the time.”

“It is exactly the time,” Grandpa said. “Because I already did something about it, and you’re all going to hear it whether you want to or not.”

He reached into his jacket pocket, the good jacket he only wore to church and to dinners like this one, and pulled out a folded envelope that looked like it had been carried around for a while, the corners soft from handling.

“Three weeks ago I went to see Harmon at his office in town,” he said, meaning the family lawyer who had handled every will and deed in our family since before I was born. “I had him draw up the paperwork to transfer the old tenant house on the back forty into Ardelia’s name. Free and clear. No mortgage, no rent, no strings. It needs work, the roof especially, but it’s sound, and it’s hers as of this morning.”

  1. I love the short stories. They are genuine and not full with vulgar talking and sex. Just plain old everyday life. Thanks for the free reading. I am 81 years old and live alone. Stories are highlight of my day.
