The Granddaughter Who Paid Her Way

I could not speak. I had grown up playing in that little house, an old two room place Grandpa’s own father had built for hired hands back when the farm still needed them, empty for as long as I could remember except for storage and barn cats.

“Grandpa, I can’t,” I started, and he held up a hand.

“You can, and you will, because you’ve earned a roof that doesn’t cost you eight hundred dollars a month to sleep under,” he said. “That’s the first thing.”

He turned to my parents next, and his voice didn’t change, but something in the room did.

“The second thing is this. Bethann is thirty years old with two healthy children and two working hands. Starting the first of the year, she pays rent in this house, same as any grown adult would, or she finds a place of her own to be a grown adult in. And if either of you,” he looked from my father to my mother, “want to help her get on her feet the way you’ve been so eager to, you help her get a job with real hours and a plan, not a permanent excuse.”

Bethann was crying by then, the kind of crying that comes from being caught rather than being sorry, but underneath it, when I looked at her carefully, there was something else too, something that looked almost like relief, like a woman who had been waiting two years for somebody to finally ask more of her instead of less.

“I don’t know how,” she said quietly, to no one in particular.

“Then we’ll teach you,” Grandpa said, and his voice softened for the first time all night. “That’s what family’s for. Not rescuing. Teaching.”

My father didn’t apologize that night, not in words, but he passed me the sweet potatoes without being asked, which from him was its own kind of confession.

  1. I love the short stories. They are genuine and not full with vulgar talking and sex. Just plain old everyday life. Thanks for the free reading. I am 81 years old and live alone. Stories are highlight of my day.
