The Stand I Wheeled Grandma To

The gray box on the counter still had Friday’s few singles and a roll of quarters in it and nothing else, because nobody all day had put a thing in it.

Janet untied her apron.

For a long moment she stood there behind the window with it in her hands, looking at the back of her mother’s head, at the sugar in Grandma’s hair, at the oak going dark over the courthouse where her own father was buried.

Then she picked up the gray cash box off the counter.

She came around the side of the stand, past the fryer, past Scott, who stepped back to give her room without being asked. She came to the front where Grandma’s chair sat in the last of the light.

And my aunt, who had sworn to all of us that there was nothing left after costs, got down on her knees in the trampled grass in front of her mother’s wheelchair with that dented gray box held out in both hands.

“Mama,” she said. And then she could not get any further.

Grandma looked down at her for a while. She was not angry. I had braced myself all day for her to be angry at the end, and she was not. She just looked tired and old and full up with something that was not anger at all.

“Open it,” Grandma said.

Janet opened the lid.

She had been crying, I think, back behind the stand where we could not see, because there was more than Friday’s singles in there now. She had put it all back. Every weekend. The Dogwood money and the school carnival money, folded flat, and the whole of Friday’s take that she had told us was gone, and all of it was in that box, in neat bands, more cash than I think I had ever seen in my life.

“I kept telling myself I earned it,” Janet said, down on her knees. “I did the work. You were laid up and I did the work and I kept telling myself. But they did not come for me today, Mama. Not one of them. They came for you. I stood there all day and watched them come for you, and I knew what I was. I have known for about six hours what I am.”
