The Game Day I Towed Them All

He started to cry again, not loud. “I’m sorry, Ma. I lost track of you. I got so scared about money I just . . . everybody turned into a dollar. Even you. Especially you, because you were the closest.”

I put my arm around him then. He is a big man and I am not a big woman and I do not care, I put my arm around my boy on the tailgate of his daddy’s truck and I held on.

“We are going to fix the money,” I said. “You and me. Out loud, at the kitchen table, with the real numbers on paper. I ran a ledger for twenty-six years, Denny, there is no number you can show me that is going to scare me. The thing that scared me was you lying about it in my own house.”

“I didn’t think of it as lying.”

“I know you didn’t. That is the part that worried me most. A man who knows he’s lying can stop. It’s the one who has talked himself into it that you have to go get a wrecker for.” I squeezed his shoulder so he would know I was half teasing. “You made a story where I was a problem in my own driveway. I had to tell you a bigger one.”

He almost smiled. “The three trucks was a bigger story, Ma. The three trucks was a lot of story.”

“Donnie wanted to bring the fleet,” I said. “I let him. A woman is allowed one dramatic morning in four years.”

“Okay,” he said.

“And you are going to call Donnie Vance on Monday and thank him for not charging me, and you are going to help him out at the yard if he’ll have you, because he mentioned he’s short a man, and it pays better than sixteen hours at the plant.”

Denny laughed, a wet, surprised laugh. “You lined up a job for me? This morning? While you were having me towed?”

“I line up what needs lining up,” I said. “That has not changed about me, even if some people forgot.”

We sat there a while longer. Then I did the last thing, the thing I think closed it.

I took Dale’s keys out of my robe pocket and I put them in Denny’s hand.

“She runs,” I said. “I charged her up last night. Your father would want her driven, not slept next to under a sheet. You take her to work.”

He closed his hand around those keys like they might get away from him.

Now here is how it is on game days in Carmody now, so you will know it did not end sad.
