The Cake My Niece Pushed Off The Table
No return address. The stamp was on crooked. And the handwriting was round and careful, with a little circle over the i in Erin.
I knew that handwriting. I had seen it once before, in glitter pen, on an invitation I never answered.
I sat down right there on my front step in the cold and opened it.
It was two pages of notebook paper, torn out of a spiral, with the fringe still on one edge. I have it in my nightstand now. I can give it to you nearly word for word.
“Aunt Erin,
Mom does not know I am writing this. She wanted me to write you a different one. She told me what to put in it. It said I was sorry and that I am just a kid and could you please reconsider. I threw that one out.
I am sorry about Luke’s cake. I am saying that first so you know it is not the reason I am writing. I am not asking for the trips back. The bus leaves today so it would not matter anyway.
I want to tell you why I did it because nobody asked me.
You came to Luke’s party. You come to all of Luke’s everything. You were at his Christmas program and his T ball and you took a day off work when he got his tonsils out.
I have had nine recitals since you started paying. You have been to zero. I counted. I sent you the invitation for parent night with my own stamp. I saved you a chair. I told my teacher my aunt was coming.
Every time something comes up Mom says text Aunt Erin the amount, and then she says tell Aunt Erin thank you, and I do, and you send a smiley face.
Luke gets an aunt who shows up. I get an aunt who sends checks.
At the bowling alley you were lighting his candles and you had not said one thing to me the whole time except hi. I know I had my hood up. I know that is my fault too. But I thought, she will look at me if I do this.
And you did. It was the first time you looked right at me in I do not know how long.
It was a mean way to do it and I picked on a little kid to get at a grown up. I know that. I feel sick every time I think about his face.
I do not want you to pay for anything anymore. I mean that. I would rather you did not. I just did not want you to think I did it because I am spoiled, because that is what everybody is saying to make you feel better or to make me feel better, I can not tell which.
Please tell Luke his cake was not a baby cake. It was a really good tractor.
Chloe”
I read it sitting on that step until my hands were too cold to hold the paper.
Then I read the middle of it again. Nine recitals. Zero. I saved you a chair.
I had spent two weeks being called cruel for the wrong thing.
I had been certain, lying awake, that the question was whether I was too hard on her. It had not crossed my mind once that I had been too absent. That I had taken a girl whose father walked out and whose mother talked about her like a bill, and I had become one more adult who dealt with her by transaction.
