The Cabin My Sister Laughed At
“Norval,” he said. “Gunnery Sergeant, Marine Corps, retired. Your daddy asked me to check on you when the time came.”
He lifted the dish a little. “Venison stew. Figured you might not have eaten.”
I let him in, because something about him felt familiar in the way people who’ve served recognize each other without needing to say much about it. He set the dish on the counter and didn’t waste time getting to why he’d really come.
“Your father drove up here about two weeks before he passed,” Norval said. “Spent three days putting things in order. Told me his daughter might show up one day looking like the world had just turned on her, and that I should be ready.”
That landed harder than I expected it to.
“He also told me to tell you something,” Norval said, and his eyes settled on me the way a drill instructor’s do right before the part that matters. “Sometimes the most valuable things are hidden in the places people laugh at first.”
A chill ran straight up my arms.
Norval nodded once toward the kitchen. “And when you’re ready, check under the floorboard by the table. He was real particular about you being the one to find it, not your mother, not your sister. You.”
He said it plain, like it was nothing, the way Marines say the important things.
After he left, the cabin felt different. Charged, almost. I set the stew aside and knelt down at the kitchen table, running my hand across the old pine boards, my father’s voice and Roena’s laugh both echoing in my head at the same time, along with that word she’d used. Shack. My mother looking down at her lap instead of at me.
Most of the boards held firm. One of them gave, just slightly, under my palm.
I pressed again and felt it shift. My pulse jumped in my throat. I worked my pocketknife into the seam, my own breathing sounding too loud in that quiet room, and the board came up clean, like it had been lifted a hundred times before by careful hands.
This is such a wonderful story! It gave me goosebumps! So touching and full of inspiration, love and kindness!
