The Cabin My Sister Laughed At
The lawyer had gone through it line by line at that table, in the dining room where I’d eaten a thousand Sunday dinners as a girl. My sister received the beachfront condo in Miami, the one our father had helped her put a down payment on years ago and, as I would later learn, had kept helping her with in ways none of us knew about. I received the cabin outside Otterville and the two hundred acres of hill country around it, the place our father had grown up in and had gone quiet whenever anyone asked him about.
Roena folded her arms the second the lawyer set his papers down.
“A run-down shack in the woods for the one who lives out of a duffel bag anyway,” she said, loud enough that a couple of the cousins looked down at their plates. “Dad really knew his audience.”
Our mother sat with her hands clasped so tight in her lap that her knuckles had gone pale, and she said nothing. That silence hit me harder than anything Roena had said, because I had spent thirty four years learning exactly what my mother’s silence meant, and it never once meant she disagreed.
I stood up to leave and Roena followed me into the hallway, the way she always has, like an argument isn’t finished until she’s had the last word standing over you.
“Don’t be dramatic,” she said. “You never cared about this family anyway. You were always off playing soldier while I stayed here and dealt with real life.”
“You handled yourself fine,” I told her. “Dad built this family. You just learned early how to stand closest to the money.”
Her smile went sharper, the way it does right before she says the thing she’s been saving.
“Well, now I’m standing closest to a penthouse in Miami, and you’re standing closest to a leaking roof in the woods.”
I walked out before I gave her the reaction she was fishing for. I have found, in eleven years of dealing with people who outrank me and people who resent me and sometimes both at once, that the walking away is the only part of the argument you actually get to control.
This is such a wonderful story! It gave me goosebumps! So touching and full of inspiration, love and kindness!
