The Rank His Family Laughed At

I thought, standing there, about the pipeline itself, the two years it took to earn those three stripes and that one star. More than half the people who start pararescue training don’t finish it. I watched roommates who were stronger swimmers than me wash out in the first month over things that had nothing to do with strength, a bad dive tank, a bad week, a knee that gave out at the wrong moment. I failed the combat dive portion myself the first time through and had to wait a full training cycle to try again, which meant an extra six months added onto everything, six more months my family back home had no way of understanding, because the Air Force doesn’t send home a form explaining why your son is quietly starting the hardest part of his training over from nothing. You just go quiet for longer, and the people who love you fill that quiet with their own guesses.

My mother, Rhoda, came over and hugged me with the enthusiasm of someone greeting a delivery driver. “Five years,” she said, though it had been three, “we barely knew where you were.”

My father, Cletis, didn’t get up from his recliner. He raised his glass an inch in my direction and went back to the football highlights on the television, the Fountain-Fort Carson Trojans losing by two touchdowns to somebody from up in Widefield.

I stood there in the doorway a moment longer than I needed to, in the same living room where I used to do homework at that same coffee table, where my grandfather used to sit with that same rescue-units book open on his knees, and I understood, all at once, that the version of me my family had built over three years of silence had almost nothing to do with the person actually standing in the doorway. They had built somebody smaller. Somebody who disappeared out of indifference instead of duty. It is a strange thing to walk into your own home and realize you have to introduce yourself to people who share your last name.
