The Note She Never Told Him About
The Cracks I Explained Away
I would like to tell you that night in the nursery was the first sign of trouble, but it was not, and if I am honest with myself, I had been explaining away smaller versions of it for close to two years.
Darren has a way of narrating my daughter to other people that I only fully understood in hindsight. At his own mother’s Christmas party the year they married, he told his aunts, in front of Krista, that she had “a lot to learn about running a house” in a tone pitched exactly halfway between a joke and a diagnosis, and everyone laughed the way people laugh at things that are not really jokes because laughing is easier than sitting with the discomfort. Krista laughed too. I remember that clearly, because at the time I told myself that a woman who can laugh at herself is a secure woman, when what I understand now is that a woman who has learned to laugh on command is often the opposite.
He controlled money in small, deniable ways. Krista had taught preschool for four years before Wyatt was born, good at it, well loved by the families, and Darren had gently, persistently, over the course of a year, made the case that with his dealership commissions what they were, it made more financial sense for her to stay home once the baby came. On its face it was a reasonable argument. Underneath it, I came to see, was a man narrowing his wife’s world down to a size he found easier to manage.
He was, by every outward measure, the most charming man in any room he entered, the kind of son-in-law other mothers at church told me I was lucky to have, quick with a compliment, generous with the tip at the diner on Route Z, the kind of man who remembered the name of the girl at the feed store and asked after her father’s hip. That charm was not a mask over the cruelty. It was the delivery system for it. Nobody believes the man who remembered your father’s hip surgery is capable of standing over a crying newborn at three in the morning, which is exactly why it took me as long as it did to see the whole shape of him.
