The Acre Under the Cottonwood

Page 7

No words

Kenny posted the picture that night. He hardly ever posts anything. His last post before that was a picture of a walleye from two summers ago.

He did not write anything with it. No caption, no birthday wishes, nothing about his mother or the land or any of it. Just the picture of the two of them at the stake under the cottonwood.

By morning it had a lot of likes, more than anything Kenny had ever posted. Mike liked it. Jan loved it.

Brody commented a single word, “Finally,” and then deleted it an hour later, I think because his mother made him.

Sunday

Marlys saw it before church. I know because Jan texted me at eight-forty that Sunday morning. Mom saw Kenny’s picture. She’s been sitting at the kitchen table with her coat on for half an hour.

We go to the Lutheran church in town, same as Marlys. That Sunday she was not in her pew.

Jan said she had gone back into the house and taken her coat off and told Jan to go on without her.

I made a roast with potatoes and carrots for Sunday dinner, because that is what you do on Sunday even when the world is crooked.

Colt ate two plates and went out to work on his truck. Kenny dried the dishes.

At two o’clock that Sunday, her tan Buick turned into our drive.

I was at the sink. I saw it come in through the window over the faucet, slow, the way she drives, and I turned the water off and dried my hands and did not move.

She got out. She was wearing her church coat, the navy wool one, and she was carrying something flat against her chest with both arms wrapped around it, the way you would carry a baby in the cold.

What she was carrying I opened the door before she could knock.
