The Envelope at the Mother Daughter Dance

Page 9

Levi blinked at him. “Holsteins, sir. About four hundred head. I run the fresh-cow barn.”

“Fresh cows,” Dad said. “That’s the hard end of it. Calving and the sick ones.”

“Yes, sir.”

“You any good at it?”

Levi thought about it. He is an honest man. “I lose fewer than the last fella did,” he said.

Dad nodded slowly. Something in his face changed. “I swept floors for Herb Schultz for four years before he let me sell a single tractor,” he said. “I’d forgotten that. I’d forgotten what it was like to be the one with nothing.”

He let go of Levi’s hand. Then he turned to Natalie.

She was still holding the envelope against her chest. Her mascara was a mess and her eyes were red, and she looked at her grandfather with a face I could not read.

“Natalie,” he said. “I was wrong to say that to you today. I was wrong to say it, and I was wrong to think it. I’m a proud old man and I measured you by the wrong stick.”

She did not say anything. I held my breath.

“Your mother sold that trailer for you,” he said. His voice broke on the word trailer. “Your grandmother’s trailer. Because I wouldn’t do right by you.”

“Grandpa,” Natalie said softly.

“I’d like the next dance,” he said. “If you’ll have an old man. I’ll understand if you won’t.”

The Next Dance

Natalie looked at me. I want to tell you I nodded, or said something wise, but I did not do anything at all. It was not my decision to make. It was hers.

She looked back at her grandfather for a long moment. Then she handed me the envelope, very carefully, the way you hand somebody a baby.

“Hold this, Mom,” she said. “Don’t lose it.”

And she put her hand in his.

The boy from Waseca, God bless him, had the sense to pick a slow one. I do not even remember what it was.

I just remember my father putting his old arm around my daughter’s waist and the two of them starting to turn, very slowly, because that is as fast as he can go now.

I walked off the floor and stood next to Warren. He put his arm around my shoulders.

Neither of us said anything. Jan came and stood on my other side and handed me a napkin, because I needed one.

I watched them dance. Dad was talking to her the whole time, low, and she was listening with her head tipped toward him. Halfway through, she laughed.

Then she put her head on his shoulder, the way she used to when she was little and he would carry her around the showroom at the dealership on his hip.

I found out later what he said. He told her about Herb Schultz and the broom. He told her about the first combine he ever sold, to a man in Butterfield who paid him partly in seed corn.

He told her that her grandmother’s folks had cried at their wedding, and not the good kind.

And Natalie told him about the heifers. She told him she was going to buy Levi’s first bred heifers with that money, ones with his name on the papers, and that the first calf would be named after Grandma.

Dad stopped dancing when she told him that. She said he just stood there in the middle of the floor and held on to her for a minute. Then they started again.
