The Babysitter Who Paid the First Month

“I said it like you were a guy I paid,” she said. “Like I had my own place and my own life and you came over at three-thirty and left at five. I heard it come out of my mouth and I wanted to die. And then I just never fixed it.”

“Why?”

She looked at the window. “Because you are the best person I know,” she said. “And every single day I live in your house, I’m reminded I couldn’t do it without you. Every towel. Every light bill I don’t pay. Every time Ellie runs to you first.”

Her voice broke on that last one. “I’m thirty-four, Adam. I wanted one person who didn’t know I fell.”

I sat there a long time. The light moved up the wall.

“You know what hurt?” I said finally. “Not the word babysitter. I’ve changed enough diapers in that house to earn any word you want. It was being something you had to explain away.”

“I know,” she whispered.

“I don’t need to be in your story with Derrick,” I said. “I don’t need credit. But Ellie needs to know where she lives, and who she lives with, and that none of it is a secret. That’s all this is.”

She nodded. She was crying too hard to talk.

“Someday’s got enough for the deposit,” I said. “I know because you told me at Easter. I paid the first month. Dale says the lease goes in your name whenever you’re ready to sign it.”

“Adam, I can’t let you.”

“It’s done. Dale probably already cashed it. He’s not a man who waits.” I put the keys in her hand and closed her fingers over them.

“This isn’t me putting you out,” I said. “You can stay at the house as long as it takes to get moved. Take two months if you want. But I think you’re ready, Britt. I think you’ve been ready a while.”

She looked down at the keys. Then she looked at the boxes behind her and put her hand flat on the top one.

“You brought these.”

“They’ve been in my basement long enough.”

From the back bedroom, Ellie shouted, “I pick this one! It has a closet with a light in it!”

And my sister laughed, really laughed, for the first time in that whole conversation.
