The Garage They Rebuilt Around Me

Why a man fixes bikes

People ask me sometimes why bikes and not something that pays.

I tell them a bike is the first machine a person ever owns, and it is the first freedom too.

Before a bike, a child goes where a grown person carries him. After a bike, he can get himself to the creek and the ballfield and his best friend’s back porch under his own power. That is a big thing for a small person.

My own daddy fixed my first bike, on a stool in a garage that smelled like this one, and he did not charge me either, on account of I was six and had no money. It is possible I have just been paying him back the long way around.

I lost Ruth four years ago now. Her heart. She went in her sleep in the spring, and I will tell you the truth, I did not think I would keep the shop open after that.

But the first Saturday in April that year, I could not help myself. I put the door up out of habit. And a little girl I had never seen pushed a pink bike up the drive with a chain off, and behind her, without a word, somebody had refilled the lemon-drop jar.

I never found out which of the grown kids did it. But that jar has stayed full ever since, and I stopped asking, because some kindnesses are meant to stay quiet.
