The Farm My Daughter Called Worthless
The farmhouse stood exactly the way I remembered it from Dorris’s descriptions and my own rare visits over the years. Peeling white paint. A porch that sagged a little on the left side. A leaning red barn behind it, and dry grass gone gold with early autumn. Precisely the kind of place my daughter would dismiss from the car window without ever getting out.
I sat in the driveway a while, engine ticking as it cooled, before I reached for Dorris’s coat on the seat beside me. When I pulled it on, something crinkled in the breast pocket.
A note. Folded small, in his handwriting, the same steady block letters he used on every invoice he ever wrote out at the shop.
Trust the farm. Table’s set for you first. Read that before you do anything else, Doretha. I love you. I always have.
That was all of it. No explanation beyond the same two words he’d given me for two years.
I climbed the porch steps slowly, boards giving under my weight the way old wood does, and slid the key into the lock, half expecting it to fight me. It turned smooth as anything, like it had been oiled recently, which struck me even then as strange for a house nobody had lived in for years.
Inside, the air didn’t smell like an abandoned building. It smelled like woodsmoke and lemon oil, like someone had swept that floor within the week. A pine table sat in the center of the front room, and on it, one envelope with FOR DORETHA, FIRST written across the front in Dorris’s hand, an old olive drab army trunk I’d never seen before, and a second, smaller envelope simply marked ELVIRA.
I sat down at that table in my late husband’s coat and opened the first envelope with hands that weren’t quite steady.
Doretha,
If you’re reading this, I’m gone, and you’re standing in the one place in this world I always trusted more than any bank, any lawyer, and I’m sorry to say, any daughter. I need you to sit down before you read the rest, because I know you, and I know you’ll want to argue with me even from here.
Good Morning, You continue to make my days brighter. Thank you 😊
