The Ring on His Kitchen Floor

The coins in the spare tire

After that, it went fast.

Brooke had told investigators she was home in Dallas the night Harlan died. Her phone said she was on the county road outside his gate at 11:40, four minutes before Wanda Tate saw my truck go by on my way to the lake. Hensley got a warrant for her SUV the next afternoon and found Harlan’s silver dollars wrapped in a beach towel in the spare-tire well, along with a signed contract from the Amarillo developer that only paid out if she inherited the ranch.

They picked her up in the gravel lot behind the courthouse annex at dusk. I was not there. Hensley told me later that she was smiling when she got out of her car, and that she stopped smiling when she saw the lights.

That was the part I did not understand until Ray explained it. A man who kills someone does not get to keep what that person left him. If I went to death row for Harlan’s murder, every acre would pass to his next of kin.

She did not just need Harlan dead. She needed me convicted.

She told them Harlan fell during an argument. That he refused to sign, and she pushed past him, and he went down against the stove. Maybe that part is even true. I will never know, and I have made my peace with not knowing. But you do not steal a man’s wedding ring on a Friday for an accident that happens on a Monday.

The district attorney dismissed every charge against me eleven days later. She came to Ray’s office to tell me herself, which she did not have to do. Hensley came too. He stood in the doorway with his hat in his hands and told me he had been wrong, and that he had been wrong because it was easy, and that he was sorry. I shook his hand. It seemed like the thing Harlan would have done.

In the spring, Brooke Voss pleaded guilty to capital murder to keep the death penalty off the table. Life without parole.

She took the easy way.
