The Recorder My Son Brought To Court
The house comes down
It came apart fast after that, the way things do when the one load bearing lie gets pulled out.
Sharon Prewitt asked to approach the bench and had a low, hissed conversation with the judge, and then she asked for a recess, and when we came back she stood and, in a careful flat voice, requested to withdraw as counsel for Mr. Vance, citing a conflict she was not at liberty to detail. A lawyer does not abandon a client mid hearing over nothing. Everyone in that room understood that she had just heard her client, on tape, describe using her own legal strategy to defraud two children, and she wanted her name a long way away from it. Judge Coleman let her go.
Grant sat alone at his table then, with no leather folder between him and the truth, and it is a strange thing to watch a man discover that all his props were only ever props.
Judge Coleman did not rule that day the way you might imagine, with thunder. She was quieter than that, which was worse for Grant. She said, for the record, that she had heard evidence that a party to the proceeding intended to seek custody not for the welfare of the children but to gain control of assets held in trust for them, and that she considered this, and I am quoting her, “one of the more serious things a parent can do.” She granted me temporary sole legal and physical custody effective immediately, ordered Grant’s parenting time to supervised visitation only, and, this is the part where I finally cried, right there at the table, ordered a copy of the recording preserved and referred to the county prosecutor’s office for review of possible fraud against a trust and against minors.
Then she looked over her glasses at my son, who was still standing because nobody had told him he could sit, and she said, “Young man. That took more courage than most grown men in this building have got. You can sit down now. You did the right thing, and it was not your job, and I am sorry it fell to you.” Cole sat down. And Sam grabbed him and held onto him, and I got up out of my chair and I did not care about looking calm anymore, I went to my boys and I put my arms around both of them at once and I held on.
Great, simply Great ❤
