The House They Sold While Gone

“Everybody sit down”

So I did the last thing any of them expected.

I did not shout. I walked up onto my own porch, past my father, into my own living room, and I said, in the same steady voice I use to tell a nervous buyer that the inspection came back fine, “I need everybody to sit down. Right now. This won’t take long.”

My mother smiled, the way she always did when she still believed she could talk her way out of anything. My father sat on the arm of my own couch and folded his hands, waiting for me to come around to their point of view. Kayla set down my lamp and crossed her arms, smug, sure the day was hers.

And the buyer, the man in the golf shirt, looked around at all of us, sensing for the first time that the pleasant transaction he thought he had completed might have a wrinkle in it.

I turned to him first.

“Sir,” I said. “I’m sorry. I don’t think we’ve met. What’s your name?”

“Doug,” he said carefully. “Doug Penner. I, uh, I closed on this place two days ago.” He glanced at my mother. “Is there a problem?”

“Doug,” I said, “did you happen to see the seller’s ID at the closing? Did you meet the owner of record?”

He looked at my mother again. “I met the family. They said the owner was traveling and had signed everything ahead of time. There was a power of attorney.” He said the last part slower, hearing it out loud for the first time in a room where I was standing.

I nodded.

“Doug,” I said gently, because none of this was his fault, “I own this house. Not personally. It’s held by a company called Ellison Holdings, and I am the only person on this earth with the authority to sell, sign, or transfer anything that company owns. I never signed a power of attorney. I have never met you before this moment. I was five hundred miles away with no phone for six days.”

The room went so quiet I could hear the movers setting my dresser down on the ramp outside.

“So I need to ask you something,” I said, still looking only at Doug. “Whose name was on that power of attorney? And whose signature did it say gave them the right to sell you my house?”
