The House I Bought In Secret
I did not know that yet. But Renee was right, and over the next few days it all came out, the way everything comes out in a town this size.
My cousin Alicia texted me Sunday to say congratulations on the new place and how sweet it was that I was opening my home to Tara during her rough patch. My aunt called my mother, and my mother told her that I had bought a big house in town and that the family would be staying there now, and that it was such a blessing after everything. A woman from my mother’s church stopped me at the Sunrise Cafe on Monday morning and squeezed my hand and said it was beautiful, just beautiful, how I was taking my parents in as they got older. I stood there with my coffee getting cold and realized my mother had built an entire story, and in the story she had made me the generous daughter who had thrown open her doors, and the truth was I had thrown three people out of them.
Then Wednesday, the thing that changed everything. Tara called me, not to apologize, but to coordinate. She was chipper. She wanted to know if she could start bringing boxes over that weekend, because, and here is the part I will never forget, she had already given her landlord notice. She had told him she was out at the end of the month. She had sold her couch to a girl at work. She had, in her own words, “already told everybody,” and she needed to be into my front bedroom by the first because she had nowhere else lined up. She had burned her own bridge on the strength of a room in my house that I had never once offered her.
I did not yell. I want you to know that. I have thought about that call many times, and the thing I am most glad about is that I did not yell. I said, in a level voice, “Why don’t you and Mom and Dad come to the house Sunday at five. Come for dinner. We will talk about all of it then.”
Tara said, “So I can move in Sunday?”
I said, “Come Sunday and we will talk.”
She heard what she wanted to hear. They always did. She hung up happy, and I hung up and sat very still, and then I called an attorney.
