The rope that pulls her

I brought him over to meet Grace.

I did not tell her first who he was or what he could not see. I just said, “Grace, this is the man who stopped everybody from clapping. His name is Dutch. He wanted to say hello.” And Grace, who had heard his voice fill that whole gym and then go soft as a lullaby, reached out her hand toward the sound of him, and Dutch reached down and took it in both of his, so small inside his, and he said, “You did a hard thing tonight, and you did it right. I have watched a lot of people walk into rooms. I never saw anybody walk into one better than you did.”

And Grace tilted her head the way she does when she is working something out, and she said, “You talk like Miss Dolores says I count. Slow on purpose.”

I have not seen a thing since before your mama was grown. But I get where I am going.” And Grace’s face did the thing again, the thing it had done on the stage, the whole face opening up like a window, because in ten years I do not think my daughter had ever, one single time, stood in front of another person who lived exactly the way she lives. Who knew the nineteen steps from the inside.

Dutch and his club rode out the next morning. But before he left, he gave Ray a phone number, and he told us he passed back through that part of the county a few times a year, and that if it was all right by us, he would like to see how Grace was getting on. And it was all right by us. It was more than all right.
