A speaker stands on stage addressing a crowd during an awards ceremony

Timothée Chalamet Thanks Kylie Jenner for Their “Foundation” and the Internet Isn’t Sure What He Meant

Timothee Chalamet won Best Actor at the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday night for Marty Supreme and gave a speech that should have been about the movie. It was, mostly. He thanked Josh Safdie. He shouted out Michael B. Jordan. He said he was more nervous than he expected. Normal stuff.

Then he looked out at the audience and said “Thank you to my partner of three years. Thank you for our foundation. I love you. I couldn’t do this without you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

The camera cut to Kylie Jenner. She mouthed “I love you” back. And then the internet did what the internet does.

Within minutes people were laser focused on one word. Foundation. Not the “I love you.” Not the fact that he’d never publicly acknowledged their relationship in a speech before. Foundation. What does that mean. Are they starting a charity. Is this an engagement hint. Is he talking about makeup. That last one was a joke but honestly at this point who knows.

Amanda Seyfried, who was there that night nominated for Best Actress, commented on an Instagram recap saying she literally thought he was talking about a foundation. Like an actual charitable organization. She had to go back and realize he just meant the foundation of their relationship. Which is both very funny and also kind of proves the point that the word choice was just strange enough to break people’s brains.

Here’s what made the whole thing land so hard though. Chalamet and Jenner have been together for roughly three years now. Dating rumors started back in 2023. They were spotted at Beyonce’s Renaissance tour, then the U.S. Open, then a handful of events through 2024 and 2025. They did the red carpet together at the Marty Supreme premiere in December wearing matching orange outfits. But through all of that, neither of them ever really said anything publicly about the relationship. It was all just photos and appearances and no comment.

So when he stood up at the Critics Choice Awards and called her his partner of three years and told her he loves her on a live broadcast, that was a first. People had been waiting for either of them to say something. Anything. And when it finally happened the word everyone fixated on was foundation.

Reddit went deep on it obviously. Half the threads were people convinced an engagement is coming. The other half were debating whether he was being deliberately vague or just talks like that. Some fans pointed out that he had a rough go of it last awards season when his SAG speech came across as overconfident and got memed pretty hard. The theory is he recalibrated this year. Shorter. Sweeter. Let the Kylie moment be the headline instead of some “I’m chasing greatness” quote.

If that was the strategy it worked. Because nobody is talking about whether the speech was too long or too confident. They’re talking about one word and a lipread “I love you” from the audience. That’s a pretty clean news cycle for a guy who’s about to spend the next two months campaigning for an Oscar.

After the ceremony they reportedly went to Lauren Perez’s birthday party and then to some spot called Max and Helen’s in LA for breakfast for dinner. Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber were apparently there too. Chalamet still had his suit on. That detail doesn’t matter at all but I liked it.

The Golden Globes are next and I’d bet money he acknowledges her again. Probably shorter this time. Probably no foundation. But the door is open now and I don’t think he’s closing it.
