The Birthday Party at the Fire Station

Page 2

Why She Wanted It

I found out later why Brielle wanted that pavilion so badly, and I will tell it straight, because she is a person and she had a reason, even if the reason does not make it right.

The pavilion at the city park is where Bodie’s dad proposed to her.

He hung little white string lights from the rafters one summer evening and got down on one knee on the concrete, and her sister filmed it.

She had wanted their baby’s first birthday to be there since before the baby was born.

She had a picture in her head of it, I guess. Pink balloons under the same rafters, and the same lights.

I understood wanting something like that. Everybody has a place that means something. I did not understand taking it from a seven-year-old boy who was her husband’s son and her baby’s big brother.

And I did not understand the text. Booking the pavilion was one thing.

Writing to nineteen mothers and asking them to choose between two children was something colder, and she had done it on purpose.

What I Did Not Do

I sat at the kitchen table with my coffee going cold and thought through everything I could do. I am a dental assistant. I spend all day thinking through what could go wrong next.

I could call the parks office. It was closed Saturdays.

I could drive over to the pavilion at noon and stand there with my receipt, except I had no receipt, because she had paid and I had not.

I could forward her text to every mom in the class with my own side of it, and people would take sides, and some would take mine.

And I could have been right about all of it, on Monday.

I could have stood at that counter Monday morning with the lady who wrote my name in March and gotten an apology and a refund for nothing.

But fighting over the pavilion would have made Bodie’s birthday a war his classmates heard about. Every kid in that class would have gone home knowing his party was the one with the fight.

I did not want my son to turn seven in the middle of something ugly. I wanted him to have a birthday.

That was the whole goal, and once I said it to myself plainly, the morning got simpler.
