The Insulin Box Grandma Drove to School

Page 7

“He was taking less, Mom. On purpose. Because of money.”

“I know, honey.”

He was quiet for so long I thought the call had dropped. Out there, I knew, he was standing outside a metal building in the dark with snow blowing past the lights, a thirty-nine-year-old man in insulated coveralls with his phone pressed to his face so the other guys wouldn’t hear him.

“I’ll be home Saturday,” he said finally. “I talked to my tool pusher. I’m taking my days early. Somebody’s covering.”

“You don’t have to do that.”

“Yes, I do,” he said. “Mom. Thank you for driving it over. I’m sorry you had to.”

“I’m not sorry,” I said. “I’d drive it to the moon.”

“I know you would.” He almost laughed. “Saturday. Can we come to your house? I don’t want to do this at ours. Not with that notice on the door.”

“Come to the house,” I said. “I’ll make a hotdish.”

That week was long. Mason’s numbers were good every day. Mrs. Halvorson called me Wednesday and Thursday to tell me so, which she did not have to do. On Thursday she added, “He came in at lunch just to show me his number. Said his grandma told him to call her, so he figured he’d start with me.”

On Friday I made tater tot hotdish, the real kind, with cream of mushroom and ground beef and the tots in neat rows on top. I made it the night before, the way my mother always did, because a hotdish is better the second day and because I needed something to do with my hands.

Saturday afternoon at about two, Jared came in my back door, stamping the snow off his boots on the rug the way I taught him when he was five. Krista came in right behind him. Mason squeezed past both of them, said “Hi Grandma” and kissed my cheek, and went straight downstairs to the basement, where the Gophers were playing hockey on the old television.

Jared hugged me. He held on a long time. He smelled like diesel and cold air and the cheap soap they have at the man camp, and I could feel how tired he was in his shoulders.

Krista stood in the doorway to the kitchen with her coat still on. She looked like she had not slept in four days. Maybe she hadn’t.

“Hi, Patty,” she said.

“Take your coat off, honey,” I said. “Sit down.”

The three of us sat at the oak table. Jared took his old spot, the one by the window, where he used to sit and kick the table leg when he couldn’t figure out his fractions. Krista sat across from me. I put coffee in front of everybody, because in Minnesota you do not have a hard conversation without coffee.

Krista had a manila folder with her. Inside were the bills, in order: rent notices, credit card statements, the truck loan, last spring’s pharmacy receipts. On top was a sheet of notebook paper listing, in her neat round hand, every one of my checks and where each one had gone.

She had brought me her whole year in a folder.

“Patty,” she started. “I need to tell you, I need to explain all of it, I know there’s no excuse, but in December when the landlord…”

Jared put his hand flat on the table. Not hard. Just flat, right next to the folder.

“Wait,” he said.

She stopped.

He didn't look at me. He turned in his chair, all the way around, and looked at his wife.
